it works on real world scales but that is not something to get to concerned with. Low res sims will allow you to quickly see if it "looks" right and at the end of the day it is all smoke and mirrors

Temperature is what will drive the buoyancy and will make density rise, as well as anything else such as fuel which has not ignited. If you add a spherical emitter with density but no temperature the density will just sit there and dissipate. Add temp and the density will rise. If you use fuel inste...
