If you just emit density and shade fire with that you will need temperature to make it buoyant or use an emitter force and/ or turbulence. Have a look at the example files in the plugin folder

You do not need particles just have a constant fuel setting, or constant anything, shade what ever you emit as fire. So say set temperature to 1 and set fire to take colour from temperature. you can use a noise map on the objects as emitter or a vertex map ( you can animate this) you can emit from a...
