AFAIK Turbulence smoke does not receive GI but can emit

you would need a plugin which exists somewhere i forget to place lights at point on your hdri sphere and the ligts derive their colour and brightness from the hdri's..not sure of the plugin..try greyscale gorilla. of course sub light scattering may be very slow but you may not need it

Don't forget you can use the ducting polys as tfd emitters so you could use the inner facing polys to create pressure/force/heat etc and you can base this on an animated gradient ( if you can handle the nightmare of getting the UVs right) to drive the smoke. For that matter you can use nay number of...
