GTX Titan X 12 GB or GTX 1080 8GB?

Post by neonz » 29 May 2016, 23:39

I'm configuring a new Lightwave rig and wanted to gather opinions from current TFD users. Since the 1080 just came out, is it recommended over the Titan X for its high clock-rate CUDA's even though it has less RAM? Not worried about price difference between these, just performance.

Also, does TFD only use one GPU at a time? Or if I had 3 GPUs, two of the choice above, would TFD combine the two GTX's for simulations?

The memory bandwidth is slightly higher on the titan. It is the memory b/w that is the bottleneck

I sold my Titans and purchased the 1080
Unfortunately the 1080 does not work with anything CUDA as of now. I need to wait until developers of the software I use have updated to CUDA 8, which is the lowest version the new Pascal chips will go.

It's a mystery to me why nVidia haven't made CUDA 8 complete before launch. And quite frustrating as it means I cannot do such jobs until updates are coming.

Last time I heard anything about it, CUDA 8 ships in August or September. And then I gotta wait for developers to do their thing.

I find myself in the same situation. Ive been able to get my GTX1080 working with Vray RT (GPU) for MODO & C4D. However, I've had zero luck getting it to work with Win64 LW2015.3 and Jawset Turbulence FD 1416, all I see is the following error whenever I hit start (or equivalent):

Is there any additional info that might help? Log file mentioned is attached as well.

That may have been the wrong log attached. In any case, here's another log demonstrating the 1080 problem...

What, precisely, do Nvidia need to update to enable TFD on GTX1080?

RCs of V8 CUDA Toolkit, etc. that support GTX1080 are all available from Nvidia and have been for at least a month now. I can understand not wanting to use early beta Toolkits, etc. but once into Release Candidates (RCs) the arguments against using them ring a bit hollow -- this kind of situation is exactly why Nvidia makes them available, after all. Other pkgs seem to be able to use them just fine, as well (witness Vray, Thea, etc).

So it's TFD that needs updating.

You really need to ask Jascha directly on this one
